Public Interest Registry (PIR), the organization that oversees the .org top-level domain, has released its Form 990 tax return, revealing financial results for 2023. The report shows that PIR generated $103.7 million in program revenue for the year, a slight increase from $102.1 million in 2022. Total revenue also rose to $105.1 million from $102.4 million, largely due to improved investment returns.
In terms of expenses, PIR paid $15.3 million to Identity Digital, which manages the backend of the .org domain, and reported $14.9 million in registry expenses. This translates to about $1.50 per domain name, with approximately 10-11 million domains under management in 2023. In comparison, the previous year PIR spent $13.1 million on the backend and experienced higher registry expenses totaling $17.4 million.
PIR has seen a significant reduction in registry service expenses since it put the contract out for rebid in 2016, establishing a cost-effective benchmark for a high-volume registry. One noteworthy change from 2022 was that PIR did not pay GoDaddy for promotional services in 2023 after spending $1.2 million the prior year.
The primary beneficiary, the Internet Society, received a contribution of $64.8 million from PIR in 2023, down from $69.3 million in the previous year.
