A network troubleshooting tool focused on path visualization is a key highlight in the recent update to Auvik’s network management software.
Founded approximately 13 years ago, the IT solutions company aimed to fill the voids in the managed service provider (MSP) arena, especially in network management. Auvik primarily serves small to medium-sized businesses and their supporting MSPs, with its customer base spread across North America and Europe.
The enhancements to the Auvik Network Management (ANM) platform include:
John Astorino, the chief operating officer at Auvik, explained to Network World the core advantage of their service: “Our biggest value proposition has been around simplifying the work for the IT professional,” he said. “If you have a non-ubiquitous network with multiple vendors, then we make your life a lot simpler in terms of observing, monitoring, and managing network devices.”
In the extensive field of network monitoring and management, Auvik finds its main competition in companies like SolarWinds, Logic Monitor, and Domotz, as stated by Astorino. He clarified that Auvik does not see itself in contention with larger, integrated vendors such as Cisco, HPE, and Dell.
Astorino set Auvik apart by citing its targeted service for small to medium-sized enterprises and its proficiency in handling networks comprising different vendors. While the company collaborates with major IT management platforms, it does not compete with them. For instance, Auvik has integration with ServiceNow, which supports its IT service management features like trouble ticketing.
A major update in the ANM platform is the introduction of Northstar, which graphically displays network traffic routes.
This tool enhances route tracing with a visual and user-friendly approach, leveraging Auvik’s established network mapping technology. The development of the Northstar tool was carried out internally by Auvik.
Astorino discussed Northstar’s capability, explaining that it enables the visualization of network traffic routes from specific devices to the internet. By activating the “Northstar” feature on a device within the Auvik network map, the application simplifies the display to show only the trajectory of that device’s network traffic. A dashboard then emphasizes relevant details about the device to aid in troubleshooting and network optimization.
Additionally, the update includes a new ARM64 collector, an architectural standard prevalent in smaller network devices and appliances.
Discussing the cost-effective nature of this new tool, Astorino mentioned that unlike Auvik’s conventional collecting methods, which necessitate the use of a server or virtual machine, the ARM64 collector operates efficiently in smaller settings, thereby reducing expenses for such environments.
He elaborated on the function of the collector, stating, “Our collector is a compact unit that integrates into the network, aggregates data from all connected network devices, and transfers it to the cloud. This allows our cloud-based software to analyze and leverage the data effectively,” he conveyed.
The new ARM collector, deployable on an affordable ARM device like a RaspberryPi, offers a cost-efficient solution for smaller customer premises.
Moving forward, Auvik is heavily focusing on automation.
“Customers struggle to find sufficiently technical talent, so increasing automation allows them to achieve more with the resources and knowledge available internally,” Astorino stated.
