Alice & Bob, a French quantum computing company, is making significant strides in the field by investing $50 million to establish a new quantum computing center in Paris. This investment reflects the company’s commitment to transitioning from pure research to the commercialization of quantum technologies, aiming to advance fault-tolerant quantum computing.

The new facility will be instrumental in the development of next-generation quantum chips, leveraging the company’s proprietary cat qubit technology, which addresses significant challenges in quantum error correction. Alice & Bob has teamed up with Bluefors, known for cryogenic equipment, and Quantum Machines, an expert in hybrid control solutions, to equip the center with essential infrastructure. These partnerships are crucial as the company seeks to develop a large-scale quantum computer named Graphene, which targets featuring 100 logical qubits by 2030.

The center spans 4,000 square meters and will include a dedicated nanofabrication cleanroom for prototyping quantum processing units (QPUs). A cryostat farm, housing 20 Bluefors dilution refrigerators, will facilitate experiments on new chip designs at the ultra-low temperatures necessary for quantum systems. Additionally, Quantum Machines will provide advanced control systems to optimize the interaction between quantum and classical computing environments.

According to Théau Peronnin, CEO of Alice & Bob, this new lab is a pivotal milestone for France’s quantum infrastructure, establishing the nation as a leader in practical quantum computing. Peronnin emphasized that the lab will support technology development that can be tested by clients, marking a shift towards commercialization.

Alice & Bob’s cat qubit technology aims to reduce bit-flip errors, a critical barrier to scaling quantum computing. The innovative design of cat qubits allows for the creation of more powerful quantum computers while consuming less space, hardware, and energy. This approach could potentially decrease hardware requirements for large-scale quantum computers by up to 200 times compared to traditional methods.

The facility will not only promote technological advancements but will also encourage interdisciplinary collaborations. Its design includes modern workspaces that are conducive to brainstorming and workshops, facilitating innovation among engineers, researchers, and business teams.
