Zyxel Networks has recently launched the CX4800-56F, a new 100GbE managed switch designed specifically for enterprise networks requiring high-bandwidth backbone connectivity. This move reflects the growing importance of 100 gigabit Ethernet (100 GbE) in enterprise environments, particularly as data demands from cloud computing and artificial intelligence increase.
Historically, 100 GbE was mainly utilized by large backbone carriers, but it is now making its way into the enterprise landscape. According to a 2024 IDC report, 100 GbE switches accounted for a significant portion of the data center market’s Ethernet switch revenues. While major players like Cisco and Arista remain dominant, emerging competitors like Zyxel are also making strides.
The CX4800-56F enhances Zyxel’s networking offerings, building on their previous XGS4600-52F model. Tri Nguyen, channel sales and product manager at Zyxel, noted that this switch expands their product range into 10G and 25G ports with 100G uplinks, catering to the needs of service providers and large deployments.
At its core, the CX4800-56F is powered by a 2.20 GHz Intel CPU and runs Zyxel’s proprietary ZyNOS operating system, which provides a familiar command interface for network administrators. The switch boasts a total switching capacity of 4.0 Tbps and can handle up to 2.0 billion packets per second with a non-blocking architecture, ensuring efficient performance even under peak traffic conditions.
Featuring 48 SFP28 ports for dual-rate 10GbE/25GbE connectivity and 8 QSFP28 ports for 100GbE connections, the CX4800-56F supports a range of functionalities. These include Layer 3 routing with access control lists (ACLs), VLAN segmentation, and advanced traffic features like port mirroring for traffic analysis and IEEE 802.3ad for link aggregation.
Designed for various applications, the switch is particularly well-suited for data centers, campuses, and community networks, where high-capacity backbone connectivity is crucial. With the rise of Wi-Fi 7 technology, this switch aims to prevent bottlenecks by providing robust interconnectivity.
Management capabilities include Zyxel’s NebulaFlex Pro technology, which allows for both standalone and cloud configurations, supported by a professional pack license for enhanced features like IGMP technology and network analytics.
An interesting feature of the CX4800-56F is its support for Zyxel’s networked AV mode, designed to facilitate AV over IP systems. This mode aims to provide seamless 4K video streaming on a 10GbE network, enriched by AI features that enhance reliability by optimizing network paths and mitigating issues such as broadcast storms.
Overall, the introduction of the CX4800-56F marks a significant development for Zyxel as it ventures deeper into the high-bandwidth enterprise networking space, promising performance enhancements and innovative features for businesses.
