Zayo Secures Corning Fiber Capacity to Power AI Network Expansion

Telecommunications company Zayo has recently secured a significant manufacturing capacity agreement with Corning to manage fiber needs for its ambitious expansion plans. This agreement is part of Zayo’s strategy to build a comprehensive network of 15,000 route miles by 2030, driven by the increasing demand for connectivity in data centers influenced by artificial intelligence (AI).

The deal covers a substantial portion of the fiber that Zayo expects to utilize in its expanded network, which includes 28 new routes—10 of which are entirely new and 18 are overbuilds, amounting to around 20 million fiber miles. Although Zayo has reported no major fiber shortages thus far, Chief Network Officer Troy Lupe highlights emerging indicators of potential supply challenges as network demand continues to rise. He emphasizes the importance of proactive planning, stating that the agreement provides them with better visibility into future supply needs.

Historically, Zayo’s approach involved ordering fiber as projects commenced; however, the extended partnership with Corning allows for better coordination and planning of manufacturing schedules. Corning, already a key player in increasing the optical infrastructure necessary for AI networks, has expanded its own manufacturing capabilities, securing significant agreements with tech giants like Meta and Amazon.

Experts from the industry, such as Ron Westfall from HyperFrame Research, note that the growing demand for high-count fiber optic cabling is becoming a crucial factor. They highlight that this demand is due to the extensive connectivity needs for distributed AI systems and data centers. The rise of AI is influencing not just the amount of fiber required but also the need for more diverse and resilient network paths.

Zayo’s initiatives, including 24 of the 28 routes serviced under its agreement with Nvidia—which covers 8,000 of the planned route miles—demonstrate the company’s proactive approach to addressing future infrastructure needs. This forward-thinking strategy aims to ensure that Zayo can meet the anticipated demand while mitigating execution risks related to regulatory and construction challenges across various jurisdictions.

As AI continues to evolve, with expectations for increased inference activities within metropolitan areas, Zayo is preparing for shifts in network traffic patterns. Given that AI workloads tend to generate significantly more data, there is a growing need for diverse and resilient network paths to maintain efficiency and performance.

In summary, Zayo’s strategic partnership with Corning and its commitment to expanding the fiber network ahead of its anticipated demand reflect a broader trend in the telecommunications sector, characterized by the necessity to adapt infrastructure in response to the rapid advancements in AI and data center technology.
