Exciting news for Windows Server Insiders! Microsoft has unveiled the latest build of the forthcoming Windows Server Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) Preview.
The newly released Build 26296 offers both the Desktop Experience and Server Core installation options for the Datacenter and Standard editions, along with the Annual Channel for Container Host, plus the Azure Edition, which is exclusive to VM evaluation.
The organization has announced that the latest build features a refreshed branding for the forthcoming Windows Server 2025 release. Testers are encouraged to consult the Windows Server 2025 preview when submitting their feedback. This build will be automatically provided to anyone who has Server Flighting turned on.
Additionally, this new build presents the Windows Server 2025 Security Baseline Preview, which enables testers to implement a variety of suggested security configurations for VM roles directly through the Windows Admin Center.
The security baseline encompasses more than 350 settings that are categorized into three groups: Domain Controller (DC), Member Server, and Workgroup Member.
Furthermore, Build 26296 introduces a new functionality, allowing Windows Server 2025 preview users to download and install the Windows Admin Center from the Windows Server Desktop using the in-OS application.
There are several known issues to keep in mind, one of which involves the Sysprep tool that is intended to generalize a Windows installation for imaging but is not functioning properly in the new build.
Moreover, the latest preview’s label may mistakenly refer to Windows 11. However, Microsoft clarifies that the package being installed is actually the Windows Server update.
In another update, Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) is set to be officially deprecated next year.
