Microsoft has issued a warning about installation issues with Windows 11 updates. Following the September patch, users might find that subsequent updates fail with the message “Operation is not supported”. A fix is currently being developed.

The company acknowledges a problem following the Windows 11 24H2 update release. Post the September 2024 update (KB5043080), there may be challenges with installing newer updates.

This problem affects all Windows 11 24H2 editions, including those that run on ARM, Intel, and AMD processors. The issue is prevalent when updates are installed manually using the Windows Update Standalone Installer (MSU). The error “Operation is not supported” appears when users try to install an MSU package through double-clicking.

The root of this problem is the newly implemented “Checkpoint Cumulative Updates” approach in Windows 11 24H2, designed to make monthly updates smaller and quicker to download. However, this new strategy is ironically leading to issues with the installation process.

Microsoft has identified the source of the error as related to instances where a Feature on Demand (FoD) or a Language Pack (LP) is installed locally without access to Windows Update (WU) or Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). This situation results in the local files being unable to update, thus causing the installation error.

In response, Microsoft has released a solution. Users who are experiencing issues will need to manually download and reinstall all relevant Checkpoint Cumulative Updates to mitigate future problems, as per the guidance provided by the company.

Additionally, this is not the sole issue related to updates that has been reported for Windows 11 24H2 this week. It is unclear at this point if an automated fix will be offered by Microsoft soon, as the company has yet to make any official announcements regarding this.

The term MSU refers to the Microsoft Update Standalone Installer, an independent update file utilized prominently by advanced users and system administrators for manual update installations, recognizable by the .MSU file extension.

For the majority of home users, this issue may not be very apparent as they typically rely on automatic updates. However, businesses and power users who manually update their systems might notice the inconvenience more significantly. They will now need to implement additional measures to ensure their systems are kept up-to-date.
