VirtualBox receives many important functions with a major update. However, Oracle is removing the evaluation option for guest extensions.
In the latest update of VirtualBox 7.1, users will notice a revamped user interface and enhanced integration with Oracle’s cloud platform (Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, OCI). A new performance dashboard now presents the resource consumption of the virtual machines (VMs) active in the cloud. Moreover, there is a new feature allowing users to clone and reset computing instances.
Adjustments were also made to the VirtualBox Extension Pack, referred to as the guest extension. This extension, which is not open-source, enriches the virtualization software with several useful features. With the update to version 7.1 and the changes in the Personal Use and Evaluation License (PUEL), Oracle has eliminated the evaluation option in VirtualBox. Users who wish to use the Extension Pack must now obtain it directly through the Oracle Software Delivery Cloud.
For users running macOS on ARM hosts, this version introduces ARM virtualization for Linux and BSD VMs. Additionally, Linux hosts using Wayland can now benefit from a shared clipboard feature, enhancing the ease of sharing clipboard content across different systems. This feature also allows the exchange of files between Windows and Linux hosts or VMs, but requires the installation of an extension pack.
The update includes a new NAT engine (Network Address Translation) supporting IPv6 and an improved encoding pipeline for screen recordings, which now consumes less CPU power. Again, use of the Extension Pack is necessary for Windows guests. The redesigned Qt 6 GUI introduced in the release notes offers a Basic mode, displaying fewer settings, and an Expert mode that shows all settings.
Finally, there are many small updates and bug fixes listed in the release notes. Version 7.1 comes almost two years after the last major release 7.0, which added fully encrypted VMs, cloud integration and 3D support to VirtualBox.
