Europe is making strides to reduce its dependency on US cloud providers with the introduction of the Sovereign European Cloud API (SECA). Launched collaboratively by European companies Aruba, IONOS, and the cloud marketplace Dynamo, SECA aims to enhance data interoperability within Europe and reduce vendor lock-in, a common issue with larger US-based cloud platforms.
Current practices in cloud computing can lead to data silos, complicating hybrid and multicloud strategies for organizations. SECA directly addresses interoperability concerns, allowing different cloud providers to enable clients to run applications across various clouds without being locked into a single vendor. This framework also adheres to European regulations regarding data sovereignty and protection.
IONOS CEO Achim Weiss emphasized the necessity for Europe to establish its own digital ecosystem to remain competitive in a technology-driven economy. He described SECA as a vital step toward creating a secure, independent, and resilient digital infrastructure. In similar sentiments, Aruba CEO Stefano Cecconi remarked that the establishment of common APIs signifies significant progress for the European cloud sector.
SECA serves as a foundational element of the EuroStack initiative, which seeks to provide alternatives to US-dominated tech standards across various fields. Initially viewed with skepticism due to its ambitious scope and estimated costs of around €300 billion ($325 billion), the changing political landscape, including concerns over US tech influence, has increased momentum for such initiatives.
However, challenges remain, particularly in navigating the complex web of national laws within the EU. Jason Wingate from Emerald Ocean Ltd highlighted that legal hurdles could complicate compliance across Europe’s diverse regulatory landscape. Additionally, there are concerns about security; the true test of SECA will be its robustness and safety in practice.
The successful adoption of SECA could offer smaller European firms a competitive edge against more prominent US hyperscalers. While proprietary solutions like Microsoft’s EU Data Boundary focus on ease of compliance with European data laws, SECA emphasizes interoperability, aiming to empower European cloud providers and mitigate dependence on external vendors.
