Universal Acceptance (UA) has shown signs of progress based on recent research from Radix, although challenges remain, particularly with Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs). UA aims to ensure that all top-level domains function seamlessly with various platforms such as websites and email services.

Despite being more than ten years since an influx of new top-level domains, many are still facing compatibility issues. Radix’s recent study analyzed 145 platforms across 16 categories—including website builders and payment providers—to assess which domain types are accepted.

The findings indicate:

1. 14 out of 16 platform categories fully accepted new short and long top-level domains (TLDs) during user sign-up.
2. The acceptance rate for these new TLDs reached an impressive 98.6% overall.
3. IDN-based email addresses, however, only achieved an average acceptance rate of 39.3% across platforms.

While it appears that progress has been made since earlier assessments, gaps, especially for IDNs and email services, still exist. Addressing these issues can be complex; for instance, it took ICANN until the previous year to enable its staff to send and receive emails from IDN addresses.

The journey towards full universal acceptance is ongoing and will require continued efforts from industry stakeholders to close the existing gaps.
