Spain’s $3.4 Billion AI Campus: A Bold Investment in On-Site Power Solutions

A significant development in the AI infrastructure sector is taking shape in central Spain, where a proposed €3 billion ($3.4 billion) AI campus is on track for approval. This ambitious project aims to establish a 300 MW facility featuring two expansive AI data centers, a move that reflects the industry’s shift towards self-sustaining power solutions.

Presented recently to Castilla-La Mancha officials, the project comes from developers EdgeMode and BlackBerry AIF, along with support from the town of Mora. One of the primary goals of the DC MALPICA AI project is to generate its own electricity, which will help lessen reliance on the traditional power grid. The details of the proposed power generation method remain undisclosed, although it is designed to minimize water consumption, aligning with sustainability goals.

Experts note that the campus’s power model is essential amid growing power constraints. "On-site generation is no longer a backup plan; it is a strategic asset,” Alex Cordovil, a research director at Dell’Oro Group, stated, emphasizing how the ability to generate power internally can expedite project timelines if grid connections are delayed.

The proposed AI campus aims to generate 300 MW of capacity and is expected to create around 5,000 jobs during construction, followed by approximately 1,000 permanent positions once operational. Cordovil highlighted that this project positions itself among the largest AI facilities planned outside of France, where a few massive AI campuses are already underway.
