Hormuud Telecom, the leading telecommunications company in Somalia, is set to expand its solar-powered data center operations to meet the rising demands of both local and global artificial intelligence (AI) markets. Despite the challenges posed by insecurity and infrastructure limitations in the Horn of Africa, CEO Ahmed Mohamud Yusuf emphasized the potential for growth within the country.

Currently, Hormuud operates 11 data centers with a total capacity of 10 MW, where approximately 95% of energy used during daylight hours comes from solar. Yusuf noted that the target capacity for upcoming facilities will vary based on demand due to Somalia’s status as one of the sunniest nations on the planet.

Founded 22 years ago during a tumultuous period of civil conflict, Hormuud has played a crucial role in establishing Somalia’s telecommunications framework. The company has co-financed two of the four undersea cables that terminate on the Somali coast and has developed a fiber-optic network connecting key urban areas. Additionally, it plans to roll out 5G services to cover 70% of the population within the next year.

As the economy of Somalia continues to grow, demand for data is expected to increase correspondingly. Currently, the country boasts some of the lowest mobile data costs in the world, averaging just $0.50 per gigabyte. Hormuud serves approximately four million customers, which represents one-fifth of the nation’s population, and has been instrumental in distributing significant humanitarian aid directly to local beneficiaries.
