Domain investors with extensive portfolios should take action to renew their domains before July to maintain their current rates. Starting July 1, 2025, a fee increase imposed by ICANN will raise the cost of domain registrations from $0.18 to $0.20.
This fee, while charged to registrars rather than directly to domain owners, is typically passed down as a line item during the registration process. Thus, anyone registering new domains or renewing existing ones can expect this increased charge when they do so after the cutoff date. This fee adjustment applies exclusively to generic top-level domains (gTLDs) and excludes country code domain registrations.
While a two-cent increase may not significantly impact most domain owners, it could be worthwhile to renew any impending expirations by the end of the month to save a bit of money. The fee hike is part of ICANN’s strategy to bolster its budget.
In contrast, there is a silver lining for those holding .com domains, as the Verisign registry will not implement its annual price increase this year. For the last four years, Verisign had raised wholesale .com prices by 7% each year.
