OVHcloud recently emphasized the significance of digital sovereignty during the Digital SME Summit held in Brussels by the European Digital SME Alliance. The event gathered over 600 participants from various sectors, including academia, business, politics, and civil society, all aiming to empower small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) as pivotal players in fostering Europe’s technological independence and global competitiveness.
Henna Virkkunen, the newly appointed EU Commissioner for Tech Sovereignty, reiterated the importance of enhancing the competitive edge of SMEs. She noted the alarming statistic that less than 40% of SMEs have integrated cloud technology into their operations and fewer than 10% utilize artificial intelligence, highlighting a significant gap from the EU’s goal of 75% adoption by 2030. Virkkunen called for improved access to digital tools and emphasized the need to instill trust among users to expedite this digital transformation.
Representing OVHcloud, Anne Duboscq, Director of Public Affairs and Communication, participated in discussions centered on ensuring digital resilience amidst economic uncertainties. She outlined OVHcloud’s strategic vision for advancing digital sovereignty in Europe, in line with the European Innovation Roadmap. This roadmap advocates for maximizing European resources, adhering to ethical practices, ensuring fair competition, and directing public procurement to foster innovation.
Duboscq pointed out OVHcloud’s long-standing commitment to creating a sovereign, open, and sustainable cloud environment, arguing that the journey to digital sovereignty necessitates collaboration between service providers, consumers, policymakers, and other stakeholders. She emphasized that Europe possesses the necessary talent and innovative spirit to nurture tech leaders, stating, "By working together, we can enhance Europe’s competitive stance while upholding our core values."
With 24 of its 43 data centers and nine Local Zones situated within the EU, OVHcloud is well-established in the region and is planning to expand its offerings further with eight new Local Zones expected to be operational by early 2025. The company’s cloud services are designed to deliver high performance and predictable costs while empowering users to maintain control over their data.
The summit’s discussions underscored the essential role played by SMEs and micro-enterprises in driving innovation. There was a consensus among participants on the need for Europe to leverage its indigenous resources and talent to support its technology sector. As the EU embarks on this new agenda, the synergy between governments, businesses, and cloud providers such as OVHcloud is poised to be instrumental in shaping a robust digital landscape.
By continuously advocating for digital sovereignty, OVHcloud remains dedicated to playing a critical role in positioning the EU as a leader in the global digital economy. The collaborative efforts highlighted during the Digital SME Summit set the foundation for a future where Europe thrives in technological innovation and resilience.
