Oklo, a company backed by Sam Altman, has secured agreements to provide up to 750 megawatts (MW) of electricity from nuclear reactors to two data center companies. This development is part of a broader strategy to secure energy supplies as the demand for electricity in the U.S. continues to surge. The signed letters of intent bring Oklo’s total pipeline of power deals to approximately 2.1 gigawatts (GW).

Based in Santa Clara, California, Oklo has not disclosed the identities of its data center clients or the timeline for the electricity delivery. Altman, who serves as the company’s chairman, is also the CEO of OpenAI. As electricity demand rises due to the electrification of the economy and the growing energy needs of technology firms, nuclear power, particularly in its carbon-free form, is gaining attention. Oklo is pioneering the development of the next generation of nuclear reactors, although it will be several years before these systems are operational.

Jacob DeWitte, Oklo’s CEO, expressed confidence in the company’s power solutions, attributing strong customer interest to the appeal of cleaner, reliable energy sources. The company is working on small reactors with capacities of either 15 MW or 50 MW, anticipating that its first reactor will become operational by 2027. This is in contrast to traditional nuclear plants, which generally possess around 1,000 MW of capacity.
