Nvidia has announced a significant advancement in storage speed for artificial intelligence applications, claiming nearly a 50% enhancement in storage read bandwidth. This improvement is made possible through their Spectrum-X Ethernet networking technology, which leverages the capabilities of the Spectrum-4 Ethernet switch and BlueField-3 SuperNIC smart networking card.

The Spectrum-4 switch boasts 64 800 Gbps Ethernet ports and a total bandwidth of up to 51.2 Tbps. It features RoCE (RDMA over Converged Ethernet) enhancements that support adaptive routing and congestion control—Ineffectively directing data packets through the least congested routes, thereby reducing traffic issues and potential outages.

For packets that arrive out of order due to adaptive routing, the BlueField-3 data processing unit ensures they are correctly reassembled, overcoming a limitation of traditional Ethernet, which would require retransmitting packets. Nvidia asserts that this capability improves the efficiency of storage system performance beyond that achievable by standard RoCE v2 networking.

Nvidia’s testing of these innovations was carried out using its Israel-1 AI supercomputer, comparing standard RoCE v2 configurations against those utilizing Spectrum-X’s adaptive routing features. The tests included various GPU server configurations ranging from 40 to 800 GPUs. The results showed that modified read bandwidth improved between 20% and 48%, while write bandwidth saw enhancements of 9% to 41% when compared to traditional networking standards.

Another efficiency boost comes from the practice of checkpointing, which periodically saves the state of processing jobs. This method allows for resuming operations from the last saved state instead of restarting from scratch in the event of a failure.

To further enhance their offerings, Nvidia is collaborating with storage vendors DDN, VAST Data, and WEKA to integrate and optimize their solutions for the Spectrum-X platform.
