Nvidia has announced an expansion of its rack-scale AI infrastructure, allowing for the integration of custom accelerators, known as XPUs. This initiative aims to provide more flexibility for hyperscalers and AI developers who are seeking alternatives to standard GPUs.
As part of this development, Nvidia has partnered with MediaTek, enabling customers to design their custom AI accelerators using Nvidia’s NVLink Fusion technology. MediaTek will supply a foundation for these designs. In addition to the partnership, Nvidia has made a significant investment of $3.5 billion in convertible bonds issued by MediaTek.
According to Dion Harris, Nvidia’s senior director of HPC and AI hyperscale infrastructure solutions, this move empowers customers to innovate without needing to overhaul their entire AI systems based on custom silicon.
The announcement comes at a time when major cloud providers, like AWS and Google, are increasingly developing their own processors tailored for AI workloads. Nvidia’s NVLink Fusion is positioned as a prevalidated platform that facilitates the introduction of these custom XPUs into existing Nvidia-powered AI environments. This includes various connectivity technologies and allows clients to utilize Nvidia’s intellectual property while maintaining control over their designs.
As AI infrastructure diversifies, analysts like Matt Kimball from Moor Insights & Strategy suggest that a wider variety of processors will be adopted, indicating that heterogeneous computing will be essential for meeting emerging demands. Options for scaling up connections among processors include Ethernet, Nvidia’s NVLink Fusion, and the developing open standard UALink.
Nvidia’s NVLink ecosystem is designed to support custom silicon development, with several companies already backing the NVLink Fusion initiative. The goal is to make this technology accessible to a broad audience, reinforcing Nvidia’s role as a critical infrastructure player in AI development.
Furthermore, Nvidia is also broadening the application of the NVLink technology beyond just GPU-to-GPU connectivity, integrating it into CPUs and alternative systems within AI environments.
