Nokia, in partnership with Islalink, has made a significant advancement in optical technology by successfully conducting tests with its sixth-generation Photonic Service Engines (PSE-6s) over a 330km undersea cable that links Crotone, Italy, with Preveza, Greece. This trial on the IONIAN cable system set a new record with an impressive transmission capacity of 800Gbps, showcasing the advancements provided by Nokia’s PSE-6s technology.

The IONIAN network, initiated by Islalink, is a robust subsea infrastructure aimed at ensuring reliable and future-proof fiber connectivity between Greece and Italy. It features a subsea connection coupled with two terrestrial rings for improved redundancy, linking major cities like Athens and Thessaloniki in Greece, with Milan and Rome in Italy, using the C+L band.

Moreover, the network successfully achieved a transmission rate of 1Tbps on Greece’s terrestrial routes, including a northern route stretching 975km from Preveza through Thessaloniki to Athens, and a southern route of 452km from Preveza to Athens.

Nokia’s PSE-6s technology not only enhances network performance but also promotes sustainability by reducing the power consumption per bit by 60%. This innovation is particularly beneficial for high-demand data center-to-data center communications, positioning Islalink as a provider of high-speed, energy-efficient connectivity for global tech leaders.
