While numerous surveys indicate that a large proportion of software developers utilize AI for code generation, the situation differs broadly in the general workforce.

A recent report from Zoho Corporation on Data Privacy and Generative AI Usage revealed that only 24% of employees use generative AI daily, while 37% have never used it. This survey was executed in partnership with CRM Essentials and gathered insights from 1,000 US employees across various industries and roles.

This contrasts sharply with claims from GitHub stating that 92% of US developers utilize AI coding tools, findings by CodeSignal that 81% of developers use them, or a study by Stack Overflow indicating 76% of developers are either using or plan to use AI coding assistants.

The survey further notes that among those employing generative AI, 18% use it exclusively at work, 32.5% primarily at work, and 22.9% use it for both professional and personal purposes. Here’s how they are applying AI in their workplaces:

Seventy-eight percent of daily users believe that AI will have a positive impact on their work experience, with 40% stating it has enhanced their productivity and 17% finding it indispensable. Conversely, less than half (48%) perceive AI as a threat to their job. Approximately 28% consider AI as a complementary tool to their work, and 25.7% view it as a necessary component to maintain their employment.

A significant majority feel that more oversight on AI is necessary, with 76% advocating for government regulation concerning AI training on company data and 75% calling for regulations on intellectual property rights related to AI-generated content.

Only 30% of those surveyed are comfortable with sharing their data with AI systems. Yet when it comes to selecting an AI service, convenience tends to be the more decisive factor for 25% of respondents, whereas only 15% prioritize data privacy.

“The survey data illustrates that employees could significantly benefit from generative AI. However, the hesitation mainly stems from a lack of familiarity rather than privacy concerns,” explained Raju Vegesna, chief evangelist at Zoho. “It is imperative for enterprises to adopt a comprehensive approach that includes progressive integration of AI functionalities while educating their workforce on safe usage practices within stringent guidelines. This will help mitigate potential risks and foster enduring success in the era of digital workplaces.”
