Artificial intelligence holds the potential to significantly boost revenue, enhance productivity, and improve operational efficiency for businesses. However, findings from a study by CompTIA reveal that both business and technology leaders are grappling with how to effectively integrate AI into their organizations. Key concerns include identifying the optimal use cases for AI, securing AI technologies, and funding the necessary infrastructure to support AI implementations.
CompTIA, the nonprofit association dedicated to the technology industry and workforce, conducted a survey involving 521 business and technology professionals. This research was part of their “Building AI Strategy” study. The findings indicate that although there is a recognition of the broad applications of AI across various business segments, there is still significant uncertainty about how to effectively merge AI with the existing human workforce.
“The challenge of finding an effective balance between human employees and new AI technologies is crucial for many companies,” stated Seth Robinson, the vice president of industry research at CompTIA, according to a press release. “There is a clear interest in enhancing workforce efficiency through strategic use of AI and focused skills development.”
CompTIA reports that business and technology professionals are currently deploying AI in various ways, as outlined below:
The majority of survey participants expressed an intent to purchase business tools enhanced with AI capabilities and also to acquire AI tools from external vendors. Less frequently, respondents indicated plans to develop bespoke AI tools for their internal use. Specifically, 71% of IT personnel and 67% of business personnel plan to acquire business tools incorporating AI. Moreover, 35% of IT staff and 32% of business staff intend to purchase AI tools from vendors. Additionally, 28% of IT personnel disclosed plans to develop internal AI tools, compared to 20% of their counterparts. According to CompTIA, the most prevalent strategy involves integrating AI into existing solutions such as customer relationship management systems, business productivity tools, and HR platforms.
Robinson mentioned, “These tools are already essential components of corporate workflows, and AI will enhance these systems as part of a sophisticated suite of solutions. In such a scenario, a firm might need a minimal level of AI knowledge across all staff but a deeper level of expertise in specific areas.”
CompTIA’s survey also asked about the biggest challenges large enterprises are encountering with AI. In response to these challenges, CompTIA has developed an AI Framework that outlines six key areas for skill development as AI technologies are integrated across business systems. These areas include cybersecurity, automatic coding, network architecture, data analytics, systems operations, and staffing adjacent to technology. The integration of AI and machine learning will necessitate evolutionary changes in the workforce, CompTIA notes. Additionally, the adoption of cloud computing may alleviate financial burdens associated with supporting AI applications, according to CompTIA.
“Utilizing cloud services or integrated features enables them to leverage AI advantages without the need to create proprietary systems, thereby diminishing the chances of substantial financial investments,” Robinson mentioned.
