I’ve been a long-time user of Linux operating systems on various laptops, typically by replacing pre-existing Windows or macOS systems myself. However, I recently opted to purchase a Linux-first laptop to gain a complete commercial experience with such a device.

A reliable laptop is essential as a remote worker. Although I own several older models, their performance is not up to modern professional standards. I did use a MacBook Air M1 for a while which was excellent, but ultimately I passed it on to someone in need. This led me to seek a dependable new laptop.

Initially, I considered another Windows laptop that I could convert to Linux, but recent issues with Windows discouraged that route. Instead, I purchased the Kubuntu Focus Ir14 Gen 2. I previously reviewed both its predecessor, the original Focus Ir14, and the larger second-generation Ir16; however, I found the latter too bulky. For a device where portability is crucial, the more compact Ir14 suited my need to write, browse the web, and join virtual meetings effectively from wherever I am.

I also looked at System76 laptops, which are priced similarly to the Ir14. The Pangolin, for instance, may offer slightly better hardware. However, my preference against Pop!_OS and the lack of appealing alternatives with System76 meant Kubuntu was the right choice for me, allowing me to start working immediately with no adjustments needed.

It’s comforting knowing I’m not relying totally on myself and desperate web searches to solve technical issues. Deep down, though, I also just like the KDE project in general. Buying and using something associated with it makes me feel like I’m participating in it.
