Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) is now deprecated, and it is no longer actively developed. Microsoft will not introduce any new features to WSUS, nor will it receive active updates as investment in WSUS functionality has been ceased by Microsoft.

Since its introduction in 2005, Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) has provided IT administrators the capability to manage and deploy updates for Microsoft products across numerous devices in a systematic manner. This has been particularly beneficial in environments where manual updates installation is impractical. Microsoft aims to phase out WSUS to promote the adoption of their cloud-based solutions among IT professionals and organizations, moving away from traditional WSUS services.

While WSUS will maintain its existing features and continue receiving updates via the WSUS channel, it is important to note that no further enhancements or capabilities will be developed. This shift impacts enterprises dependent on WSUS for their update management. Microsoft has also phased out WSUS driver synchronization in favor of newer cloud-based driver services, with the deprecation set to finalize on April 18, 2025.

Microsoft reported in a blog post that the discontinuation of active development for WSUS does not affect its existing functions or its compatibility with the Microsoft Configuration Manager.

Though WSUS is available on Windows Server 2025, Microsoft recommends organizations to start using cloud tools like Windows Autopatch and Microsoft Intune for client update management and Azure Update Manager for server update management. It is up to organizations and their IT policies to decide on using the existing WSUS functionality or cloud-based tools. The cloud-based tools will get regular updates and new functionalities as they have been cited as the replacements for WSUS.
