Meta Platforms, the parent company of social media giants Facebook and Instagram, is currently pursuing control of the domain name 35.com through legal action. This move follows a ruling in which a court mandated the domain registrar, 35.cn/35.com, to deposit $5.5 million into an escrow account as part of a settlement related to a cybersquatting lawsuit.

The lawsuit arose after Meta successfully contested the actions of OnlineNic, which is linked to 35.com, and was awarded $3.135 million plus approximately $2.2 million in legal fees. The complications began when it was revealed that 35.com’s board had greenlit the sale of its registrar business to another company. In response, a U.S. court issued a restraining order that prohibited any sale or transfer of the registrar’s assets until the $5.5 million deposit was made.

Meta has expressed uncertainty over whether the asset sale occurred, but highlighted that the $5.5 million deposit deadline was January 31. They have not been informed of the funds being deposited. In their latest court filing, Meta has requested several actions from the court, including:

• Seizing the domain name 35.com through Verisign, the registry for .com domains, while allowing 35.com to maintain its usage.
• Freezing the registrar’s assets.
• Accounting for any sale of 35.com’s registrar business.
• Ordering ICANN to deny any changes in control of the registrar.
• Awarding Meta additional legal fees.

This situation remains under judicial review as Meta seeks to assert its rights over the domain.
