It holds the rights to the plural form and was completely taken aback — taken aback! — to discover that someone would use the singular version for a manga website.
Let me express my disbelief.
A French company that specializes in publishing manga comics online made the bold move to file a cybersquatting complaint regarding the domain name manga.io.
The Complainant operates under the domain name mangas.io and seems to have assumed that this granted them exclusive rights to the singular version of this commonly used word.
It’s worth noting that the Complainant is from France, where there tends to be a penchant for claiming various generic trademarks.
The panel from the World Intellectual Property Organization initially sided with the Complainant on the first aspect of the complaint, acknowledging that the domain closely resembles a mark that they claimed rights over.
However, the panel ultimately ruled in favor of the domain registrant regarding the matter of rights or legitimate interests.
The decision was made not to pursue allegations of reverse domain name hijacking.
