European data center developer and operator maincubes has successfully secured a 14-hectare plot in Nauen, Havelland, located just outside Berlin, marking a pivotal move in its ambitious expansion strategy. The company plans to construct a state-of-the-art colocation data center campus at this location to meet the growing demands of high-performance computing, cloud services, and artificial intelligence (AI).

The first phase of construction for maincubes new facility is set to begin in 2025.

The planned colocation data center campus, titled BER02, will be backed by a robust 200 MVA grid supply connection. This development follows the successful launch of maincubes’ FRA03 site and the acquisition of a brownfield site in Frankfurt (FRA04) earlier in 2024. The new campus aims to augment maincubes’ capacity to serve its expanding portfolio of global hyperscale clients, providing advanced infrastructure tailored for the increasing needs of the digital economy.

Significant progress in obtaining zoning rights and grid connections for the Nauen campus has been made through effective collaboration between maincubes, the AM:PM Grund Group (the developer for the Nauen campus), and local government officials in Nauen and Brandenburg. Over the last year, these partnerships have facilitated a smoother process, ensuring that the project achieves vital development benchmarks. The formal development plan is anticipated to be completed by late 2024, after which work on an on-site substation will commence without delay.

Local Solar and Wind Power

A major aspect of maincubes Nauen project is its commitment to sustainability. Plans for the site include the integration of renewable energy sources from nearby solar and wind farms to power the new substation. In conjunction with a battery energy storage system (BESS), this could furnish the data center campus with a direct and sustainable energy supply. Furthermore, the campus is designed to incorporate a waste heat recycling system, which will redirect excess heat from the data centers into a heating network for Nauen and surrounding areas. This initiative aligns with maincubes’ broader vision of establishing environmentally friendly data centers.

Construction is projected to start in the summer of 2025, with the inaugural colocation data center at the BER02 campus expected to be operational by the end of 2027. This schedule underscores the company’s commitment to fostering sustainable development in the data center sector, aiming to create future-ready facilities that cater to the growing requirements of digital infrastructure.

“Our economy and society have much to gain from advances in digitalization, cloud services, and artificial intelligence, but we can only unlock this potential through secure and sustainable data centers,” stated Oliver Menzel, CEO of maincubes. “The new facility in Nauen is a crucial step toward this goal. With its strategic location near Berlin, which is quickly becoming Germany’s second-largest digital infrastructure hub after the Rhine-Main region, and its reliance on locally generated renewable energy, the Nauen campus is in perfect sync with our vision for creating intelligent, sustainable environments for the digital future.”

Patrick Lieberkühn, Managing Director of the AM:PM Grund Group, also highlighted the collaborative spirit of the initiative, expressing, “We are thrilled to partner with maincubes, a professional and solution-focused organization that understands and respects local conditions.” Together, both entities are dedicated to advancing sustainable development in the region.

maincubes’ BER02 campus is part of a broader initiative encompassing four significant development projects throughout the Rhine-Main area and the Berlin/Brandenburg region. Upon completion, these projects will yield over 250 megawatts (MW) of data center capacity, solidifying maincubes’ role as a prominent player in Europe’s data center colocation ecosystem.
