Liverpool FC recently faced a setback in a cybersquatting dispute concerning the domain name LiverpoolFCTickets.com, which was filed with the Czech Arbitration Court. The club sought to reclaim the domain but was surprised by the ruling.

Panelist Victoria McEvedy, who oversaw the case, referred to a provision in the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP) that permits the use of trademarks in certain contexts if they are related to the services or products provided by the brand. While the current holder of the domain was not actively reselling tickets for Liverpool FC, McEvedy concluded that legitimate use of the domain was still possible.

Despite the domain leading to a parked page filled with ads for Liverpool-related terms, the panelist suggested that the registrant did not respond to the dispute, which typically raises questions about their intended use. Interestingly, the domain was noted to have been acquired by its current registrant shortly before the dispute was filed.

McEvedy also pointed out that Liverpool FC’s claim appeared to be an opportunistic attempt to acquire the domain without compensation. She stated that the club wished to acquire the domain due to a change in ownership rather than paying for it, emphasizing the inherent value of domain names in a first-come, first-served system.
