Latos Data Centres has unveiled a bold initiative to establish 40 AI-focused data centers in the UK by 2030. Founded by telecom entrepreneur Mike Carlin, the company’s goal is to transform the data center sector through innovative modular designs that cater specifically to the rising demands of AI workloads.

The first step in this ambitious plan is the construction of a hyperscale complex in Cardiff, Wales, which has already received planning approval. This facility will boast an impressive 90 megavolt-amperes (MVA) of power capacity and occupy a total area of 50,400 square meters. Notably, it will be entirely powered by renewable energy sourced from the National Grid, supplemented by the nearby Tremorfa Energy Park, known for its substantial 1000MW battery energy storage system.

Latos Data Centres’ approach includes designing their facilities to support network edge applications, such as autonomous vehicles and smart manufacturing. The modular construction of these data centers will allow for rapid deployment, with the capability to have new facilities operational in less than six months, even on sites as compact as 0.3 acres.

Highlighting the need for a new infrastructure to accommodate the surge in AI, Mike Carlin remarked, “Organizations will require facilities offering greater processing power closer to where it is needed, alongside the ability to customize infrastructure to their needs.” He emphasized that Latos Data Centres brings extensive expertise to meet these evolving demands.

The Cardiff site is poised to create around 200 permanent jobs and an additional 250 to 300 positions within the local supply chain.
