A jewelry maker named Mengjia Li, who goes by the name Eve Li, has recently attempted to reverse hijack the domain name eveli.com. A dispute arose after her negotiations to purchase the domain fell through, leading her to file a Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP) complaint against the current domain owner.
Li operates her jewelry business under the domain eveli.co.uk and sought the domain eveli.com after negotiations for its purchase broke down, reportedly after she hinted at filing a UDRP complaint as leverage. The contested domain has been registered since 2005, but domain records reveal the current owner acquired it around 2010 or 2011.
Despite claiming to have used the name Eve Li professionally since 2005, the evidence presented was insufficient to demonstrate any common law rights to the name prior to the UDRP case. Li did not obtain a registered trademark until 2024, which only cited a use in commerce starting in 2021.
The panelist, David L. Kreider, determined that Li’s actions indicated a clear attempt at reverse domain name hijacking, especially since she herself admitted to using the threat of a UDRP filing as a bargaining tactic after the purchase offer was rejected. This situation was framed as a “Plan B” strategy to obtain the domain despite her prior lack of rights. Both Li and the domain’s registrant represented themselves in the proceedings.
