Introducing the FAIR Package Manager: A New Alternative to WordPress Repositories – What You Need to Know!

A few days ago, WordCamp Europe was held in Basel, Switzerland, a significant event in the WordPress community. This year’s highlight came from the launch of the FAIR Package Manager, which has emerged as a potential alternative to the traditional WordPress.org theme and plugin ecosystem. The FAIR project, developed by veteran WordPress contributors and supported by the Linux Foundation, aims to create a more decentralized and independent repository of trusted plugins and themes.

The FAIR initiative was conceived in response to growing concerns about the governance of the WordPress ecosystem. Specifically, incidents such as Automattic’s control over WP Engine’s ACF plugin raised alarm among enterprise-level users regarding the potential risks posed by centralized power. Karim Marucchi, CEO of Crowd Favorite, recalled receiving calls from various companies questioning the reliability of WordPress amidst such unilateral authority. These discussions highlighted the need for a fairer alternative that would decentralize influence over the ecosystem.

FAIR, standing for "federated and independent repository of trusted plugins and themes," grew from six months of collaborative effort involving over 100 contributors from more than ten organizations. The Linux Foundation was approached to ensure neutral governance, drawing parallels to its oversight of critical open-source projects like Linux. Influential WordPress figures like Carrie Dils, Mika Epstein, and Ryan McCue lead the technical steering committee.

The launch of FAIR has the potential to disrupt the long-standing control that Automattic’s CEO, Matt Mullenweg, has had over WordPress. Importantly, FAIR is not a fork of WordPress; rather, it operates within the WordPress framework, allowing users to access plugins and themes outside of the official WordPress.org repository.

As of now, users can engage with FAIR in two main ways: via a plugin that can be installed on an existing WordPress site or through a complete WordPress installation that includes the FAIR plugin pre-installed. The plugin is straightforward to install and will alter how updates for themes and plugins are managed, transferring this responsibility from WordPress.org to the FAIR Package Manager.

For users, the decision to install FAIR may lean more towards ideological support than practical necessity, as everyday usage of WordPress will remain largely unchanged. However, developers stand to benefit significantly as FAIR aims to streamline plugin distribution by packaging free and premium versions together. This could also suit enterprise needs by addressing concerns around supply chain security and regulatory compliance.

Despite the potential benefits, Matt Mullenweg shared his apprehensions during a session at WordCamp Europe shortly after the FAIR announcement. He raised concerns about security vulnerabilities that could arise from the decentralized nature of FAIR, operational complexities, trust and quality control issues, and the enforcement of existing policies.

Mullenweg’s mixed response acknowledged the excitement around new code contributions while emphasizing the need for careful consideration of the implications of a decentralized model. The future of the FAIR project remains uncertain, yet its introduction signifies a pivotal moment for WordPress governance, potentially reshaping its trajectory in the coming years.

As this new chapter in the WordPress ecosystem unfolds, many are left to ponder the implications of FAIR and whether it will find a place within their own WordPress practices. What are your thoughts on the FAIR Package Manager? Would you consider adopting it for your sites?
