Google’s Threat Intelligence Group recently reported a notable trend in zero-day vulnerabilities affecting enterprise systems. In 2024, there were 75 different zero-day vulnerabilities exploited, a decrease from the 98 tracked in 2023, but an increase from the 63 recorded in 2022.
The vulnerabilities were categorized into two main groups: those impacting technologies commonly used by everyday users, such as mobile devices and operating systems, and those focused on business-related technologies, including security software and specialized equipment. The decline in total vulnerabilities suggests that companies are improving their security measures, making it increasingly difficult for attackers to exploit certain weaknesses. However, at the same time, commercial surveillance entities are reportedly becoming more adept at obscuring their activities, complicating detection efforts.
Interestingly, while hackers have traditionally focused more on ordinary user targets, the landscape is shifting. In 2024, 44% of all attacks targeted enterprise technologies, up from 37% in the previous year. This signals a critical need for businesses to enhance their defensive strategies against such threats to mitigate risks.
