The patent, numbered 12,316,600, is titled Dynamic systems for migrating spam-induced resource starvation domain name search methods of use thereof and outlines a method for identifying and limiting abusive domain availability checks.

Domain registrars like GoDaddy face challenges when their systems are overwhelmed by high volumes of search requests generated by automated bots or malicious actors. These excessive requests can consume computing resources, leading to slowdowns or service outages that affect legitimate users.

To combat this, the patented system leverages historical user data and behavioral patterns to issue “digital tickets” or temporary authorizations that allow users to perform domain availability checks. If a user’s requests exceed specific thresholds or appear suspicious, the system can reduce the resources allocated to that user or require additional verification steps, such as completing a CAPTCHA.

The patent filing notes that GoDaddy employs a machine learning model that continuously assesses user activities against their historical behavior, allowing the system to predict the likelihood of future legitimate searches. Verified users are afforded more resources, while suspicious or spam-like behaviors prompt protective measures.

GoDaddy’s patent application was submitted in November 2024 and was granted on May 27, 2025.
