GlobalConnect has successfully completed the first phase of the Nordic Wave project, a European Union-supported initiative aimed at bolstering digital infrastructure in the Nordic region. This phase, which improves fiber-optic connectivity between Northern and Central Europe, significantly enhances data transmission capacity and resilience, benefitting economic growth, innovation, and security.

The initial phase covers the route from Stockholm to Luleå and optimizes the existing subsea fiber backbone to achieve a remarkable data capacity of up to 27 terabits per second. This upgrade allows for high-definition video streaming and large-scale enterprise operations with minimal lag. The European Union contributed €650,000 to this project, underscoring its strategic significance.

Rather than constructing new pathways, GlobalConnect took the environmentally conscious approach of enhancing its current infrastructure. Pär Jansson, Senior Vice President at GlobalConnect, highlighted the efficiency of utilizing existing networks, stating that the upgrade improves digital capabilities without disturbing local environments or communities. The improved connectivity stands to benefit businesses, municipalities, and the public sector, while also reinforcing regional defense communications.

Connecting the Region

The Nordic Wave project aims to create a robust and high-capacity data network that extends beyond the initial phase from Northern Sweden to Germany and Norway. This project is crucial for positioning the region as a leader in modern industries, sustainable energy, and technological innovation. Key goals include stimulating economic growth by attracting energy-intensive sectors like data centers, enhancing network resilience for crucial communications, and fostering collaboration among Nordic research institutions and technology firms.

The project employs dense wavelength-division multiplexing technology, enabling multiple data signals to be processed simultaneously over various light wavelengths. This method increases the overall capacity without needing to install new physical infrastructure, allowing for speeds of up to 400 gigabits per second per channel.

To provide context, this speed is sufficient to transfer the data of an entire laptop in less than a second or stream 100,000 ultra-high-definition movies at once. By implementing this technology, the Nordic Wave project offers a considerable upgrade without interrupting existing services.

The initiative is divided into three phases. The recently completed first phase connects Stockholm to Luleå. The upcoming phases will extend this network from Luleå to Narvik and from Trondheim to Sundsvall, with the goal of full completion by mid-2026. This will further elevate digital connectivity across the Nordic countries and emphasize the region’s role in advanced internet infrastructure.

A Long-Term Vision

The Nordic Wave project aligns with the European Union’s broader digital initiatives, which focus on transformation, sustainability, and cross-border connectivity. As GlobalConnect modernizes the necessary infrastructure, it not only supports commercial interests but also strengthens the region’s strategic capabilities concerning data security and defense communications.

With the first phase complete, focus turns to the subsequent stages, which promise to create new business opportunities and enhance international collaborations. This evolution will help cement the Nordic region’s status as a global leader in digital resilience.

Pär Jansson reiterated the long-term importance of this initiative. He indicated that GlobalConnect considers it essential to future-proof regional infrastructure to meet the increasing demand for data. The Nordic Wave project is designed for the benefit of society at large, ensuring high-speed and reliable connectivity as digitalization accelerates.

GlobalConnect stands as a major provider of fiber-optic connectivity across the Nordic region, managing a network that spans 244,000 kilometers throughout Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Germany, and Finland. The company provides comprehensive connectivity solutions to 30,000 business clients and fiber-based internet services to over 830,000 households. With a workforce of 2,000 and a revenue of SEK 7.6 billion in 2023, GlobalConnect remains a key player in advancing digital infrastructure in Europe.

The advancement of the Nordic Wave project reflects GlobalConnect’s commitment to sustainable and high-performance internet solutions, essential for shaping the region’s digital future and reinforcing its influential role in global connectivity and data security.
