The Green Building Initiative (GBI) has launched a new sustainability certification program specifically engineered for data center campuses. This initiative, in collaboration with Compass Datacenters, aims to enhance the environmental responsibility of digital infrastructures. The Green Globes Data Center Campus Certification provides a streamlined method for data center operators and owners to evaluate and verify the sustainability of multiple buildings on a campus.

As the digital economy grows, demands for data and energy are on the rise, pushing the industry to improve efficiency while reducing environmental impacts. The Green Globes certification addresses these pressing challenges by facilitating a thorough assessment of interconnected systems across an entire campus.

Vicki Worden, GBI’s CEO, underscored the need for sustainable practices in the development of the digital infrastructure. She said, “It’s imperative that we plan, build, and operate data centers with sustainability in mind. Tailored for multi-building environments, the Green Globes Data Center Campus Certification distinguishes itself from other certifications by factoring in the redundancy and interdependence common in mission-critical settings. It simplifies sustainability certification across various facilities by ensuring consistent oversight from certified Green Globes Assessors, who conduct on-site evaluations and offer insights for improving energy consumption, water use, material efficiency, emissions, site impacts, and long-term resilience.

Compass Datacenters has been crucial in co-creating this certification. Recognized for its swift deployment methods and standardized modular construction, Compass plans to implement the certification at several of its campuses located in Dallas, Phoenix, Chicago, and Mississippi.

Amy Marks, SVP of Innovation at Compass, expressed that the campus-wide certification aligns with the company’s operational philosophy. The certification process starts with an introductory consultation with GBI and requires organizations to reach at least the Stewardship Level within GBI’s membership framework. Initially applicable only to new construction campuses with three or more buildings, GBI plans to widen its applicability to existing facilities soon.

Organizations benefit through cost savings related to registration and assessments, assigned assessors for theme-based evaluations, and promotional prospects like campus plaques and increased media visibility. Projects fulfilling the certification standards may also be eligible for local incentives and compliance with sustainability regulations.
