During recent videos, Cate discussed that Identity Digital retains 10% of the revenues from .ai domains, while the remaining 90% is allocated to the government of Anguilla.

In a video from March 2024, Cate mentioned that the domain was projected to generate approximately $3.9 million for the Anguillan government that month. A subsequent video reported slightly lower figures, but he remained optimistic about future earnings. With the rise of artificial intelligence awareness, particularly after the introduction of ChatGPT in late 2022, .ai domains gained traction, leading him to forecast that the monthly revenue could reach around $6 million when renewal periods hit in November 2024.

Cate emphasized the significance of retaining control over the domain amidst discussions about its bidding process. He urged Anguilla to recognize the domain’s potential value and avoid signing fixed-price agreements with large corporations similar to those made by other nations. Ultimately, Anguilla decided to partner with Identity Digital for the management of the .ai domain beginning in January 2025.

In a more recent video, Cate responded to criticism during the upcoming elections in Anguilla by explaining the historical context of the .ai domain. He recounted how Jon Postel originally entrusted him with the management of the domain, which he later passed on to the Anguillan government. While he initially provided 75% of the revenue back to the government, financial struggles led him to enter a payment plan which later resulted in an increased share.

Cate’s disclosures highlight a substantial revenue model for .ai domains, with the majority of profits directed back to Anguilla under the current management agreement with Identity Digital.
