PJM Interconnection, which serves about 20% of the US population from the Midwest to the East Coast, has issued a warning about potential power shortages this summer due to extreme heat. While the grid operator anticipates sufficient power supply to meet typical demand, it notes that the available generation capacity might not cover required reserves in the face of severe weather conditions.
The anticipated demand could peak at 166 gigawatts—surpassing the previous record of 165.6 gigawatts set in 2006. For context, one megawatt can typically power about 800 homes in the PJM region. The upcoming summer is expected to be hotter than usual, especially along the Eastern seaboard, with demand rising by 0.9% to potentially hit 154.1 gigawatts. PJM has also noted that it has 7.9 gigawatts of spare resources available through demand-response initiatives, which encourage both commercial and residential consumers to reduce their electricity usage during critical periods to help stabilize the grid.
Although it’s challenging to predict when or if extreme demand scenarios will occur, PJM’s caution highlights the ongoing supply-demand challenges resulting from the retirement of older generators and the slower pace of new resource development amidst increasing demand.
