The PostgreSQL Global Development Group has revealed the launch of PostgreSQL 17, the latest iteration of the open-source database.

As noted in the group’s announcement, PostgreSQL 17 introduces enhancements in performance and scalability, adapting to contemporary data access and storage requirements driven by cloud-native computing and the emergence of AI.

A significant highlight of this release is the improved support for JSON, which has been a key factor in its adoption by users. Tom Kincaid, SVP of Database Server Development at EDB, a prominent contributor to the project, mentioned that “one of the most requested features has been the implementation of JSON_TABLE. This feature allows users to convert a JSON document into a view resembling a relational table… it truly showcases the extensibility of Postgres and its ongoing evolution towards user-friendly adoption.”

With PostgreSQL 17, new support for SQL/JSON constructors (JSON, JSON_SCALAR, JSON_SERIALIZE) and query functions (JSON_EXISTS, JSON_QUERY, JSON_VALUE) has been added, providing developers with alternative methods to manage their JSON data. Additionally, this version introduces more jsonpath expressions, focusing on the conversion of JSON data into native PostgreSQL types such as numeric, boolean, string, and date/time types, as stated by the group.
