During her keynote at the first ever Dev Summit Munich, Teena Idnani, senior vice president at JP Morgan Chase, provided an overview of quantum computing and discussed how we can prepare for its forthcoming transformation in “traditional” computing. In addition to explaining its concepts and highlighting its advantages, she pointed out the “quantum-ready” programming languages.

Idnani began her presentation by emphasizing that quantum computing is not merely a faster version of traditional computing, but represents a fundamentally distinct computational model. Central to this model is the qubit concept, which possesses “quirky” properties that set it apart from conventional binary bits. She highlighted the significance of:

The combination of qubits’ characteristics brings forth computational speed. The paradox lies in the necessity to isolate the system to maintain the superposition state while also needing to interact with it for data processing. The answer is to develop fault-tolerant quantum computers that can self-correct.

According to Idnani, “Quantum computing is significantly more disruptive than AI.” It has the capability to affect various industries, and she underscored the possible repercussions for four specific sectors: pharmaceuticals, finance, logistics, and automotive. No matter the industry, the ability to conduct better simulations and achieve quicker computations will pave the way for solutions previously unconsidered.

Quantum computing holds immense promise, but it also introduces a variety of challenges. The most significant of these lies in the field of cryptography. Our existing cryptographic algorithms depend on the duration it takes conventional computers to perform mathematical tasks. However, with the accelerated capabilities of quantum computers, these algorithms might become outdated within mere hours. Thus, the demand for post-quantum cryptographic solutions is an urgent requirement, not a distant consideration.

To bridge the gap between the experimental and theoretical aspects of quantum computing and the practical users, Idnani highlights the emergence of programming languages tailored for the forthcoming wide-scale accessibility of these machines. She noted that IBM has made its quantum computer accessible through the cloud.

In summary, it is clear that some of humanity’s most pressing issues, such as food security, renewable energy, climate change, economic disparity, health crises, and water shortages, are deeply intricate and extensive in nature. The multitude of factors involved makes them seem nearly impossible to solve within manageable timelines using existing computational resources. Nevertheless, quantum computing stands as one of humanity’s greatest chances to innovate and tackle these urgent challenges.
