Microsoft recently released a preview version 1.20 of SharePoint Framework with several updates for Viva Connections cards, four months after the last minor version 1.19. The public release is expected for September 2024.
Version 1.20 of SPFx includes significant updates for Microsoft Viva Connections components. These components in SPFx are implemented as Adaptive Card Extensions (ACEs), which use the visual language of adaptive cards. Adaptive cards are utilized in various Microsoft products, including Outlook, Teams, and SharePoint, while ACEs are specific to Viva Connections.
The incorporation of ACEs emerged first in SharePoint Framework 1.13, introducing a user interface visualization, known as card view in SPFx, initially limited to pre-defined templates. The subsequent release, Version 1.18, introduced the BaseComponentsCardView, allowing developers to craft custom card components like headers, images, bodies, or footers. By Version 1.19, a new functionality was added with the data visualization ACE, enabling developers to create line charts by feeding in specific data series and visualization attributes.
The latest Version 1.20 further expands data visualization capabilities, adding three new options: bar chart, pie chart, and doughnut chart, maintaining consistency with the code structure introduced in the previous release.
A significant update has been made to the Quick Views of Viva Connection Cards. Quick Views are triggered by interacting with a card through actions such as clicking or tapping a button. This action opens a larger dialog window containing the card’s Quick View component.
Previously, up to version 1.20, developers were restricted to using an adaptive card template to create a Quick View, utilizing the JSON template and data payload which SPFx then rendered as an adaptive card. An example of this can be seen in this Microsoft sample. With the release of version 1.20, a new render method has been introduced, similar to that used in SPFx webparts. This update allows developers to employ raw HTML or any UI framework, like React, to construct the Quick View. This advancement enables the creation of more intricate Quick View layouts for Viva Connections cards, unhindered by the constraints of the adaptive card language. Although there is currently no official documentation update, Microsoft has released a new sample demonstrating how to utilize this feature.

To transition from SPFx version 1.19 to the 1.20 preview, developers must remove the 1.19 packages from their package.json file and install the 1.20.0-beta.0 packages. Additionally, an upgrade can be facilitated using a CLI tool to update solutions to the latest SPFx version.
