The European Commission has granted €14.3 million to AFR-IX Telecom to expand the Medusa Africa submarine cable system, a crucial initiative aimed at improving digital connectivity between Europe and Africa.

This funding, part of the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) Digital initiative, marks a significant advancement in intercontinental communication. The expansion targets West Africa and is intended to meet rising connectivity demands while preventing network saturation. This strategic move will enhance network resilience and ensure more secure digital communications across regions.

The project includes the development of a 24-fiber pair undersea cable linking Atlantic Africa to the Southern European Data Gateway. Additionally, it plans to investigate potential branch routes along Africa’s west coast and conduct extensive sea surveys, including a dedicated Branching Unit leading to the Democratic Republic of Congo. Such efforts aim to create a cohesive African connectivity framework within the larger Medusa network.

This funding is part of the EU’s broader commitment to enhancing global digital infrastructure, featuring additional projects funded under the CEF Digital initiative. Among these is the ATMED Malta – DG initiative, which has received €3.7 million to connect Malta with the Medusa network. In total, the EU’s digital infrastructure initiative allocates €420 million to various projects, with a specific focus on submarine cables.

With this investment, the European Union reinforces its role as a key player in advancing global digital connectivity, paving the way for enhanced telecommunications capacity between Africa and Europe.
