A man named Virgil Griffith, who previously faced incarceration due to international sanctions violations, has recently been released from prison. His legal troubles arose after he assisted North Korea in evading sanctions using cryptocurrency, an area where the country has garnered a notorious reputation.
Griffith was sentenced to 56 months in prison but served three years before his release this month. During his incarceration, an intriguing domain name dispute ensued involving a domain he had registered prior to his imprisonment: eth.link. This domain was designed to facilitate the use of Ethereum-based names in conventional web browsers by allowing users to enter a .eth address as example.eth.link to access websites.
While Griffith was in prison, the domain expired and was subsequently auctioned off, fetching a remarkable $852,000 at Dynadot. This led to a surge of interest from the Ethereum Name Service (ENS), which is operated by True Names, Ltd. The ENS swiftly filed a lawsuit against GoDaddy, where the domain was registered, along with Dynadot and the winning bidder, aiming to reclaim control of the domain.
Later, however, the ENS chose to drop the lawsuit, concluding a heated legal battle over the domain. Currently, eth.link redirects users to eth.limo, which offers similar services associated with the Ethereum Name Service.
