Equinix has made a significant move by inaugurating its first International Business Exchange (IBX) data center in Jakarta, Indonesia, a step aiming to bolster the country’s digital infrastructure and support the increasing demand for artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud services. This new facility, named JK1, emerges from a partnership with PT Astra International Tbk, one of Indonesia’s prominent conglomerates.

Located strategically in Jakarta’s Central Business District, JK1 connects to over 50 local and international network service providers. This setup is designed to empower Indonesian businesses and multinational corporations in creating secure digital ecosystems that can handle advanced technologies such as AI and cloud computing. The data center caters to companies in search of high-performance infrastructure and reliable connectivity, facilitating access to both regional and global markets.

The Indonesian government has welcomed this investment with enthusiasm. Meutya Hafid, the Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, characterized JK1 as a gateway for global tech firms and startups to expand their footprint in Indonesia. The introduction of this data center is anticipated to improve local infrastructure capacity and stimulate collaboration across the private sector, particularly benefiting small and medium-sized enterprises.

Ricky Kusmayadi, Deputy Minister for Investment Information Technology, also highlighted JK1’s importance in strengthening Indonesia’s position as a key digital hub. He pointed out the government’s efforts to attract further foreign investment into the data center industry, targeting stakeholders keen on enhancing a resilient and diverse digital framework.

In focusing on sustainability and readiness for AI, Equinix sees Indonesia as a priority market. Cyrus Adaggra, President of Asia-Pacific at Equinix, acknowledged strong customer demand at the launch and reaffirmed the company’s long-term commitment to Southeast Asia. Haris Izmee, Managing Director of Equinix Indonesia, noted that the swift adoption of cloud technology and the booming e-commerce sector, projected to be worth US$120 billion by 2025, are driving the need for robust data services.

The JK1 facility is deliberately designed with both sustainability and AI readiness in mind. The eight-story data center will offer 1,600 cabinets and 5,300 square meters of colocation space, integrating advanced cooling technologies such as liquid cooling to accommodate high-density workloads. It aims for a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) goal of 1.41, aligning with global energy efficiency standards. To further its sustainability pledge, Equinix has acquired renewable energy credits to counterbalance the facility’s electricity consumption with green energy.

Santosa, Director at Astra, expressed that the collaboration with Equinix merges expertise in digital infrastructure with extensive local market knowledge, aiming to broaden access to digital services throughout Indonesia, overcoming time and location barriers.

Globally, Equinix operates 270 data centers across 35 countries, with 60 facilities situated in the Asia-Pacific region alone, and continues to pursue expansion avenues in Thailand and the Philippines.
