Observability providers Observe and New Relic have introduced new capabilities tailored for Kubernetes, enhancing their platforms to streamline problem resolution in complex container environments.

Observe has added features to its observability platform aimed at helping DevOps teams, site reliability engineers, and software engineers quickly identify and address issues within Kubernetes setups. Their new Kubernetes Explorer tool simplifies the process of visualizing and troubleshooting applications by consolidating fragmented data across metrics, traces, and logs. This addition offers insights specifically tailored for managing Kubernetes, a platform whose complexity has surged as its adoption increases.

Amit Sharma, Vice President of Product Marketing at Observe, highlighted the challenges posed by the dynamic nature of containerized environments, noting that traditional observability tools struggle with the volume and variety of data. He emphasized the need for solutions that can provide contextual insights across diverse data formats and application deployments.

Gartner’s "2024 Critical Capabilities for Container Management" report predicts that over 75% of AI deployments will utilize container technology as their underlying infrastructure by 2027, further underscoring the necessity for specialized expertise in troubleshooting within sophisticated environments.

James Governor, co-founder of RedMonk, reiterated this sentiment, stating that the complexity of cloud-native systems continues to be a significant hurdle for SREs and on-call engineers. He pointed out that Observe is addressing these challenges with Kubernetes-specific tools integrated with AI features to enhance visualization, discovery, and anomaly detection.

Kubernetes Explorer not only analyzes a distributed platform’s components for faster root-cause analysis but also builds custom visualizations specific to incidents to aid in troubleshooting and reduce mean time to repair (MTTR). It grants visibility into the historical performance of Kubernetes elements, assisting IT professionals in diagnosing and resolving issues more effectively.

On a similar front, New Relic has rolled out what it calls "one-step observability for Kubernetes," which aims to enhance monitoring capabilities within Kubernetes environments. This update provides comprehensive visibility across applications and workloads, enabling teams to swiftly pinpoint and resolve issues.

According to Manav Khurana, Chief Product Officer at New Relic, modern organizations are increasingly adopting Kubernetes to foster innovation. However, this shift can lead to challenges in performance management. New Relic’s solution aims to simplify these observability tasks by integrating application performance monitoring (APM) with Kubernetes, supported by AI-derived insights.

The New Relic observability platform includes several enhancements for Kubernetes:

  • One-step instrumentation: This feature automates the APM instrumentation process, ensuring accurate performance management of both Kubernetes clusters and their associated applications without necessitating code changes.
  • AI-powered insights: The platform provides unified application and Kubernetes data visualization, allowing quicker identification and resolution of performance problems.
  • Support for OpenTelemetry and Prometheus: This integration unifies instrumentation of OTel and Prometheus to eliminate data fragmentation and visibility gaps.
  • User-friendly access via AI: New Relic AI enables users of any skill level to access insights through natural language, democratizing the observability experience.

Both new capabilities from Observe and New Relic are accessible to their customers at no additional cost, reflecting a growing need for efficient observability tools in increasingly complex IT environments.
