Denmark is on the verge of a significant advancement in its digital landscape with the establishment of its first fully Danish-owned hyperscale data center, which is set to commence operations by 2026. This landmark project aims to enhance the country’s digital sovereignty while ensuring a sustainable infrastructure.
Backed by the Thylander real estate investment group in collaboration with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, the data center is projected to reach a capacity of 200 megawatts, making it one of the largest in Denmark. The initial phase of construction will provide an early capacity of 10 to 20 megawatts, with further expansions planned to meet increasing demand for large-scale data processing and storage. This surge in demand is largely attributed to the rapid advancements in cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and digital enterprise requirements. Industry experts view this initiative as a critical step toward the evolution of a mature local data center ecosystem, where Danish-owned facilities can thrive.
The chosen site in Esbjerg was selected due to its excellent fiber connectivity and access to renewable energy resources. Located on the west coast, Esbjerg is strategically positioned with direct fiber links to mainland Europe, which minimizes potential disruptions from undersea cable damages and assures resilient international connectivity. These technical advantages were essential in the decision-making process and underline the facility’s goal of becoming a pivotal component in Denmark’s growing digital economy.
Bjarke Mikkelsen, CEO of Thylander, highlighted that sustainability and energy efficiency are at the core of this project. Plans include harnessing renewable energy sources and implementing waste heat recovery systems that will contribute to the district heating network, aligning with Denmark’s broader climate objectives.
The Danish industry community has expressed strong enthusiasm for this development. The Confederation of Danish Industry, recognizing the project’s dual impact on enhancing digital capacity and economic potential, has given it their full endorsement. Further supporting this vision, Esbjerg Municipality was recently awarded the title of Data Center Municipality of the Year by the Danish Data Center Industry (DDI) Awards, thanks to its strategic investments in digital infrastructure and regional collaborations.
Anders Frich Mathiesen, chair of the Data Center Industry and head of Thylander’s data division, accentuated that the site meets essential infrastructure needs while reinforcing Denmark’s control over its digital assets. Caroline Stage, Denmark’s Minister of Digitalization, also endorsed the initiative as crucial for maintaining the country’s competitiveness in an AI-driven global economy.
This ambitious project signifies Denmark’s aim to not only serve as a center for sustainable technology but also to take a leading role in digital sovereignty and innovation. As the demand for secure and high-performance computing infrastructure continues to rise, the establishment of this data center may mark a transformative phase in how Denmark manages and operates its digital framework.
