ICANN-accredited registrar Openprovider has suffered a significant data leak, exposing 164GB of sensitive customer information. This leak, discovered by cybersecurity researcher Bob Diachenko and a team from Cybernews, included crucial transfer authorization codes. If these codes were accessed and domains were not protected by transfer locks, there was a risk that malicious actors could transfer the domains away from their rightful owners.
The leaked data also contained personal information of domain registrants, such as email addresses and phone numbers, which could potentially be exploited for malicious activities.
After being notified by the researchers in early April, Openprovider rectified the issue. The company revealed that the data had been accessible for about three months prior to the notification. Openprovider, which operates under Hosting Concepts B.V. and manages approximately 800,000 registered .com domain names, confirmed they would inform their customers about the situation in their regular newsletters. However, there was no mention of the incident in archived newsletters, and they only reached out after Cybernews reported the leak.
The company maintains that they believe no unauthorized access occurred and issued an apology for the delay in communication. In an email to customers, they stated their investigations suggest that no data was leaked, expressing gratitude toward the cybersecurity researcher for highlighting the vulnerability. They acknowledged their failure to promptly notify customers and committed to improving their security protocols and communication practices moving forward.
Openprovider emphasized their confidence in their systems, asserting that, had any data been compromised, it would have been detected shortly afterward. They are prepared to address any individual concerns regarding potential data breaches from their clients.
