Just months after Amazon Web Services (AWS) acknowledged that drone strikes had damaged two of its data centers in the Middle East, new reports have surfaced alleging missile attacks on its facilities in Bahrain by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). On July 20, the IRGC claimed to have attacked AWS’s central data infrastructure in Bahrain with multiple cruise missiles, claiming complete destruction.
This assertion follows an earlier incident in March when AWS confirmed that drone strikes had struck two of its facilities, incurring significant structural damage and disrupting power supply. Satellite images reportedly corroborate damage to the Bahrain facility, although AWS has not officially confirmed this latest claim.
As investment in hyperscale data centers nears $700 billion, security experts are raising concerns about the adequacy of traditional perimeter defenses against emerging aerial threats. Dr. Courtney Williams, founder of the defense tech firm Vigil Vector, highlighted the vulnerability of billion-dollar assets to low-cost aerial attacks, such as a drone or missile strike that can disable critical infrastructure.
Williams argues that the industry’s historical focus on ground-based security measures like fences and cameras overlooks the new threat landscape. Data centers, once secured against ground threats, must now account for vulnerabilities presented by aerial assaults on rooftops and other exposed areas.
If such aerial threats become more common, experts suggest that data center operators should consider deploying counter-uncrewed aircraft systems (counter-UAS) technologies to protect against drone attacks, while relying on governments for missile defense. However, layers of security measures against drones could provide a practical solution for critical infrastructure.
