Colt Technology Services is sounding the alarm for businesses to prioritize the risks associated with quantum computing, as a recently commissioned global survey reveals alarming statistics. Only a mere 6% of IT leaders from the US, Europe, and Asia categorize "understanding quantum computing" as their primary strategic concern, and only 17% place it among their top three priorities. This research involved 1,236 IT decision-makers across 13 countries, illuminating a concerning gap between the swift evolution of quantum technology and the readiness of enterprises to address its implications.
As the digital landscape shifts towards artificial intelligence, Colt stresses that organizations cannot afford to neglect the potential cybersecurity threats posed by quantum computing. A significant concern highlighted is the "harvest now, decrypt later" threat model, where cybercriminals intercept and store encrypted data for future decryption using advanced quantum computers that could potentially breach existing cryptographic protections.
In response to these concerns, Colt has proactively been testing quantum-secure encryption technologies on its optical wave network. Following successful trials, the company has rolled out quantum-safe solutions designed to protect data transmissions against potential future threats from quantum computing. Additionally, Colt is collaborating with industry partners to investigate quantum-safe networking applications, particularly in low Earth orbit satellites, where data security is crucial.
Buddy Bayer, COO of Colt Technology Services, emphasizes the urgency for businesses to act: “AI has taken center stage in recent years, but companies need to broaden their focus and start taking into account some of the implications of quantum. Quantum will usher in transformative change, but it also brings risks that enterprises can’t afford to ignore.”
Colt believes that by providing accessible quantum-resilient technologies today, businesses will be better equipped to harness the transformative potential of quantum computing, all whilst ensuring that their data remains protected against future risks. The survey covered IT decision-makers in countries, including the US, UK, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Denmark, Singapore, Japan, and Hong Kong.
