Cisco has announced an expansion to its Nexus 9000 Series, now incorporating support for Intel’s Gaudi 3 AI accelerators. This integration is intended to enhance options for clients looking to develop AI clusters, specifically with the Nexus 9364E-SG2 switches and OSFP-800G-DR8 transceivers certified for Intel’s Gaudi 3 AI servers.
These servers, which house eight Gaudi 3 accelerators, can leverage a non-blocking 800 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) network to train large language models (LLMs). The configuration facilitates significant scalability by allowing multiple Gaudi 3 servers to interconnect, thus improving training speed and efficiency. Each server also features 24 x 200 GbE interfaces for scale-out networking, which supports communication between Gaudi 3 accelerators across different servers.
The Cisco Nexus 9364E-SG2 switches themselves offer a range of connectivity options, including 64 x 800 GbE or 512 x 100 GbE interfaces. There are two models available, differing primarily in port form factor: one accommodating OSFP ports and the other utilizing QSFP-DD ports. Both types can effectively connect to Intel Gaudi 3 servers using 4 x 200 GbE cables.
Centralizing management for these advanced setups is the Cisco Nexus Dashboard, which provides a platform for overseeing AI fabric networks, offering visibility into performance through RoCEv2 and automated provisioning templates.
Cisco is not solely reliant on Intel for its AI initiatives. The company also collaborates with other major tech players like Nvidia, integrating their Spectrum-X technologies into Cisco’s offerings. In addition, they leverage AMD’s Instinct AI GPUs and Pensando DPUs, forming a diverse array of computing and networking solutions for AI applications.
Alan Weckel, co-founder and analyst of the 650 Group, emphasized the importance of partnerships in building comprehensive AI networking solutions. He noted that collaboration with companies like Nvidia and AMD has enabled Cisco to offer more flexible, effective, and cost-efficient solutions tailored for enterprise needs. Furthermore, Weckel highlighted the utility of their Nexus 9000 and Nexus Dashboard products, which aim to simplify network operations through telemetry-driven insights and automated policy management, essential for enterprises looking to scale efficiently while maintaining performance and security.
