Cisco has announced enhanced integrations between its hybrid cloud solutions and Amazon Web Services (AWS), aiming to improve visibility and help enterprise clients effectively troubleshoot application availability issues across multicloud networks. This update is powered by Cisco’s recent acquisition of Isovalent’s container security technology.
The focus of these new network troubleshooting capabilities is on container security technology, a result of integrating Isovalent’s offerings into Cisco’s infrastructure. Isovalent was a collaborator on the development of eBPF (extended Berkeley packet filter), a Linux kernel technology that enables secure program execution within a sandboxed environment. This integration allows users to add security, observability, segmentation, and networking features seamlessly, without altering kernel source code.
The newly integrated Isovalent Enterprise enhances AWS capabilities by sending networking telemetry directly to Amazon CloudWatch Network Monitoring. This AWS service provides visibility into the connections between AWS resources and on-premises infrastructure. Consequently, workload data can now be linked to actual network performance metrics within AWS environments.
In a statement, Tom Gillis, Cisco’s Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Security Business Group, emphasized these benefits, noting that this enriched visibility data can be utilized in tools like Splunk for creating unified dashboards. This allows security and network teams to monitor application performance and security threats effectively.
For users of Kubernetes, particularly those using AWS Elastic Kubernetes Service, the eBPF-based Cilium technology offers kernel-level visibility, enabling detailed telemetry collection like TCP and UDP protocol data, packet loss, and latency.
These advanced integrations between Cisco and AWS provide significant insights into all workloads, allowing network teams to monitor metrics, visualize application paths, and correlate data, greatly expediting troubleshooting processes. Gillis remarked that collaboration traditionally required days between teams can now be resolved in minutes.
Over recent years, Cisco and AWS have worked closely to streamline the deployment and management of cloud resources. Recent efforts include the introduction of Cisco ThousandEyes Cloud Insights, aimed at enhancing cloud infrastructure discovery and application performance tracking.
This strengthened partnership signifies Cisco’s commitment to supporting operators in achieving a more agile environment for modern applications, while AWS benefits from improved network visibility and performance analytics.
