Amazon Web Services (AWS) has unveiled its latest custom AI chip, the Trainium2, along with fresh cloud services designed for training and deploying large AI models. This announcement was made during the AWS re:Invent conference held in Las Vegas on December 3.

The new EC2 Trn2 instances are equipped with 16 Trainium2 chips, offering peak performance of 20.8 petaflops, making them suitable for large language models (LLMs) with billions of parameters. Additionally, AWS revealed the EC2 Trn2 UltraServers, which feature 64 interconnected Trainium2 chips and reach up to 83.2 peak petaflops, enabling the training of even the largest AI models. In a significant collaboration, AWS is working with Anthropic, the company behind the Claude LLM, to deploy an extensive EC2 cluster of Trn2 UltraServers, enhancing their capacity for future models.

Looking ahead, AWS announced the impending Trainium3 chip, which promises double the performance and 40% greater energy efficiency compared to Trainium2. This next-generation chip, crafted on a 3-nanometer process, is anticipated to launch in late 2025.

Analysts’ Insights on Trainium2

Industry analysts believe that AWS’ announcement strengthens its AI capabilities and presents a competitive low-cost alternative to Nvidia GPUs. According to Gartner analyst Jim Hare, Trainium2’s enhanced performance and energy efficiency will likely attract price-conscious businesses seeking alternatives to traditional GPU-based systems. This move aligns well with enterprises transitioning from experimentation with AI to deploying at scale in a more economical manner.

Moor Insights & Strategy analyst Matt Kimball noted that the Trn2 instances, capable of delivering significant peak performance, position AWS favorably in relation to Nvidia and AMD offerings. Kimball further suggested that enterprises previously hesitant about using AWS’ chips may reconsider following its alignment with Anthropic, which shows that Trainium can handle demanding AI tasks.

Competitive Landscape and AWS’ Chip Strategy

AWS, alongside cloud competitors Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure, partners with major chip manufacturers like Nvidia, AMD, and Intel. However, they also find value in developing their own chips to meet specific needs efficiently. AWS’ strategy is centered on providing diverse options for customers: alongside Trainium2, they continue to offer a variety of EC2 instances powered by Nvidia GPUs and Intel Gaudi accelerators.

AWS maintains that the Trainium2 will deliver high performance for training advanced AI models at the lowest cost. For example, by using Trainium2, Anthropic’s Claude Haiku 3.5 LLM reportedly achieves a 60% increase in training speed compared to other alternatives.

AWS’ Data Center Infrastructure Enhancements

In addition to the chip announcements, AWS introduced new infrastructure improvements within its data centers aimed at better supporting AI workloads while enhancing operational resilience and energy efficiency. The upgrades include advanced cooling systems, with the introduction of liquid cooling, and renewable diesel-powered backup generators to lower emissions.

These innovations will facilitate a six-fold increase in rack power density over the next two years, vital for handling high-density AI workloads. Automation advancements in AWS’s control systems are expected to allow for rapid troubleshooting, minimizing downtime through swift software interventions.

According to IDC Analyst Vladimir Kroa, the combination of these improvements can notably enhance both operational efficiency and resilience across AWS data centers.
