Microsoft is investigating problems with the August updates for Windows Server 2019, which can paralyze them.
Problematic Windows update.
The recent security enhancements rolled out by Microsoft for Windows Server during their August Patch Day could potentially disrupt the normal operations of Windows Server 2019. Microsoft acknowledges the issue and is actively working on identifying the cause while proposing temporary solutions.
Administrators may note performance degradation post-installation of the August security patches on Windows Server 2019, with symptoms including a slowdown, system unresponsiveness, and heightened CPU activity, particularly linked to cryptographic services. According to Microsoft’s Windows Release Health advisory, these issues might occur in conjunction with the operation of antivirus programs that perform scans in the %systemroot%system32catroot2
directory, due to a catalog enumeration fault arising during Windows update processes.
Microsoft conveys that initial assessments suggest that the complications primarily affect specific circumstances, detailed as follows: elevated CPU usage, increased disk latency and activity, potential degradation in system or application performance, or problems initiating the CryptSVC service, which might manifest as a black screen on startup, prolonged boot times, or frozen and unresponsive systems.
Since these scenarios are usually used in enterprise environments, it is unlikely that home users of Windows Home or Pro will observe this behavior.
Microsoft is initially addressing the problem with the Known Issues rollback mechanism, which can remove faulty updates or update components. For IT managers, the company also provides a special group policy for download in the Windows Release Health notes, which can be located under “Computer Configuration” – “Adminsitrative Templates” – “Windows 10 1809 and Windows Server 2019 KB5041578 240816_21501 Known Issue Rollback” following its installation. The GPOs are tailored for different Windows versions and require a restart to take effect.
The developers are working on an automatic solution for future Windows updates. It will then no longer be necessary to download and install the group policy. However, Microsoft has not yet announced when the solution will be available.
